Convicting the Innocent in Nicaragua
On convicting the innocent: Nicaraguan legal expert, Sergio Cuarezma, presented on the status of the Nicaraguan Judicial system in the First Latin American Congress of Penal Law and Criminology this week.
He reported the shocking results of a recent empirical research on criminal investigations in Nicaragua proving that most violations of fundamental rights of defendants charged occur in the police investigation phase. Specifically with regard to judges allowing the state prosecutor to charge without sufficent evidence. This is exaclty what has happened in Jason's case.
